The friendly attendant left them for a moment and returned with a young lady.
“Hi,” she said. “I’m the resident archaeologist. I believe you’ve brought something for us to have a look at.”
Their father introduced the children and they explained what Mr Kane their history teacher had told them. They also said that he had advised them to bring the stone to a museum, and that he had not believed the message on the Ogham stone to be true. He said that it was only a fanciful tale invented by a people who loved everything to do with this planet.
But, of course, the children now knew better. It was sad that they could not say so, and they didn’t mention a word about their meeting with the Shamrogues, or how their new little friends were close by. The great secret was going to be theirs alone.
The young lady examined the stone closely. She rubbed its surface and then she took some notes. “This is very interesting,” she said.
Meanwhile, the children examined the round mosaic floor with a pattern of the signs of the zodiac on its surface. They could see into the main hall, which was dimly lit and was full of glass cabinets with many historical artifacts on display.
Niamh whispered to the other two, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if our Ogham stone was to be put on show in there?”
“It certainly would,” the archaeologist said. “But I’m afraid it might be some time before we can make a decision of that sort. Opinions other than my own have to be considered about what goes on view to the public. So, we’d be obliged if we could hold on to this for a while.”
The children looked up at their father. “Well,” he said awkwardly, “if that’s the usual procedure, then I’m sure Niamh, Sinéad and Conor will agree.”
“Mr Kane was right then?” Niamh asked. “The stone belongs here?”
“I’m not exactly sure yet,” the woman replied. “In the strictest sense, this is not an Ogham stone as we know them. They are usually much larger and normally only carry the name of some great chieftain from the past. This stone is full of Ogham script, but it is more of an oracle or message carrier. Whoever wrote it used the old way of notches and grooves instead of letters. As far as I know, nothing like this has been found before.”
The museum was definitely the safest place for something of this nature. After all, the children had no more use for the stone. Further, its powers had been expended, as far as they knew.
The children raced back to the car before their father. The Shamrogues had arrived at the conclusion that being out of the rucksack was better than remaining in it. The city was something they really wanted to see and being discovered did not seem to bother them. But they did look a little ashamed when they saw Conor wagging a finger at them through the window.
Sona and Glic, who had been happily swinging from the steering wheel, abruptly stopped.
